Graphic Drawing Made Easy: Simplify Your Drawing with Bold Shapes 🦀

Graphic Drawing Workshop (Replay)

Art Gym Replay: Graphic Drawing Workshop

If you’ve ever found yourself overcomplicating a drawing, then this workshop is for you!

In this one hour workshop, Adam Ming and Katie Stack will lead you through a series of exercises to draw in a graphic style. You will begin by intentionally drawing various shapes that will later become the building blocks of your artwork. By the end, you will have tons of pages of shapes that can be used in your future work, and most excitingly, you will have a completed piece of art featuring a crab! 🦀 (Why a crab? Well aside from being very fun to draw, crabs are made up of lots of shapes that make them the perfect subject for this exercise!)

This workshop is not only about how to draw graphic shapes, but how to see them in a reference image. You’ll learn the steps to go from observation to creating a modern, graphic drawing, like this one:

What You’ll Learn:

  • How to draw shapes deliberately

  • How to recognize shapes in a reference image

  • How to simplify objects as shapes (in shapes), such as an oval for crab claws

  • How to build with shapes (in shapes), such as the crab inside a shape (Can you tell that we’re all about shapes in this workshop?!)

  • How to sketch multiple graphic shapes quickly, so you can choose the strongest one for a final piece of art

Some the shape exploration Katie did during this workshop

The Benefits:

  • Exploring and developing a graphic way of drawing

  • Learning how to simplify objects in to shapes (a skill that is so useful across a wide range of illustration projects!)

  • Time to connect with fellow illustrators in a supportive space

  • Sharing your work in the gallery and getting inspired
