January Workshop: The BIRBS
3 reasons to draw birds!
If you’re new here Art Gym was founded by Katie Stack and Adam Ming as a way to develop our drawing skills in community, every month, we host a drawing workshop, sharing some of the skills we are developing and using in our own practic.
Adam here, and I’m here to announce January’s Art Gym workshop which will all be about drawing birds(birbs)
I’ll take you on a journey of different ways to draw birds from Playful to Scientific and everything in between.
Here’s three reasons I think drawing birds are a BIG skill for any illustrator.
Bird images are filled with symbolism and meaning, think of a dove, a crow or even an owl, each image can be associated with such a broad range of meaning. This can be used to convey ideas conceptually in editorial or narrative illustration, a single bird image could evoke all manner of associated with the bird. Making drawing birds a big plus in your tool kit.
Birds are a great inspiration for patterns and icons, and because of this there is a large history of bird inspired art to draw from and to build upon.
Birds are just fun to draw, they can be wacky and silly or graphic and decorative.
I’ve drawn one book with a bird as the main character and am working on another book about a flock of wacky birds, so I’ve been drawing a lot of birds, and I’m excited to draw birds with you and learn how Katie thinks about drawing birds too!
