Anthropomorphic Animals Workshop

How to create in-demand animal characters (Recording)

Art Gym: Anthropomorphic Animals

In this session of Art Gym, Adam Ming and Katie Stack will lead you through some exercises to develop a unique animal character, perfect for children’s picture books. You will study examples of animal characters and then create your own by studying reference and adding various details from fashionable clothing to engaging expressions.

What You'll Learn:

  • How to develop an animal character from reference

  • Useful tips for simplifying a character into shapes, which makes it faster and easier to draw your character throughout the whole book

  • The importance of filling your sketchbook with various character designs, and how to use those designs to make a strong picture book character

The Benefits:

  • A chance to develop an animal character that could become portfolio work, inspire a story, or fill your sketchbook

  • Learning a skill that is useful beyond the workshop—what you’ll learn applies to developing animal characters in your future work

  • An opportunity to work on your personal style while working on character design

  • A place to connect with other artists while sketching and learning together

Here is some of Katie Stack’s work from the session. What kind of character will you create?
