What is Art Gym?
Here’s what Adam says Art Gym is.
A judgement free environment to draw together with other people
I want to draw with other people.
I love the communal aspect of taking an art class, and just being with a group of people drawing and growing together. And I want a place where the outcome is less important than trying things and seeing what happens. Some outcomes will be great and we can celebrate together, and when the outcomes are not so great we can learn together.
A Gym has this feeling of we’re all starting at different places but we have a common commitment to a personal goal. Art Gym is my place to workout with people. And the workouts are great each building specific skills.
Sometimes I’m privileged to lead the workout, other times I’m fellow student and peer.
Here’s what Katie says Art Gym is.
Art Gym is a WORKOUT!
I’m not kidding… you’ll be exhausted at the end of every workshop, but you’ll also feel so accomplished.
Some of your drawings will be scribbly messes and others will be bits of gold that spark an idea for a fabulous portfolio piece. Or someone might even see the exploratory sketchbook pieces you share after Art Gym and hire you to draw their dog (this happened to me).
That’s the beauty of Art Gym – we experiment, play, learn, and share our work all with the goal of improving, but without the pressure of having “perfect” work at the end of the workshop. But if something does come of your sketches - amazing!
Instead, we spend the workshop really diving into specific skills, so we can learn and practice that specific strategy. By consistently practicing these various skills, our illustration toolboxes become fuller and more fine tuned, thus preparing us for future work.
